Roof Cleaning Facts

Before treatment
Before treatment, the ugly black streaks ruin this home's appearance and value.
During the treatment
During treatment, the roof is still wet and the streaks are starting to disappear.
After treatment has dried
After the roof is completely dry, the black streaks are gone and the roof looks like new!

Black roof streaks or stains are not caused by tar, acid, dirt or jet fuel. They are actually caused by a hardy type of algae called Gloeocapsa Magma. Once a single algae spore lands on your shingles and takes hold, the limestone filler in the shingle's granules becomes a food source for the algae, which will multiply and spread rapidly. Not only does this ruin your home's curb appeal, it will also eventually cause damage to the roof.

Many people assume that they need a new roof when they see these black streaks, but in most cases a professional roof cleaning is all that's needed. In fact, cleaning your roof can actually extend the life of the roof, because, if left untreated, the algae will eventually destroy the shingles. Also, if your roof is covered with black streaks, the result is a hotter attic and higher air conditioning bills. It is certainly more cost effective to hire a professional roof cleaner than to waste money on utility bills.

Although some companies may tell you that black roof streaks require scrubbing, we do not recommend or use scrubbing or high-pressure roof cleaning techniques. Scrubbing or pressure washing a roof can remove the shingle granules, which add color to the shingles and also deflect sunlight. Instead, we use a gentle spray to distribute our special formula of ingredients that will clean the roof effectively and immediately without causing harm to the shingles. We also take great care to protect your perimeter landscaping. In the top picture, you can see how we wash down the landscaping to dilute any overspray.

There is also the possibility of moss growth on your roof. This green growth left untreated can become so thick that it looks like carpet and is very noticeable from the ground. We can kill this moss, turning it a blonde color, but unlike the black streaks, which will disappear immediately when treated, the moss can remain for up to six months until Mother Nature safely washes it away.

Roof cleaning is very affordable and is a great way to instantly beautify the look of your home and neighborhood. Call us today to schedule a free estimate.
